Marriage and Love

Marriage and Love by Emma Goldman

Marriage and Love by Emma Goldman

The popular notion about marriage and love is that they are synonymous, that they spring from the same motives, and cover the same human needs. Like most popular notions this also rests not on actual facts, but on superstition.

Twelfth Night

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare

Like many of Shakespeare’s comedies, Twelfth Night centers on mistaken identity. The leading character, Viola, is shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria during the opening scenes. She loses contact with her twin brother, Sebastian, whom she believes to be dead. Masquerading as a young page under the name Cesario, she enters the service of Duke Orsino through the help of the sea captain who rescues her. Orsino has convinced himself that he is in love with the bereaved Lady Olivia, whose father and brother have recently died, and who will have nothing to do with any suitors, the Duke included. Orsino decides to use “Cesario” as an intermediary to tell Olivia about his love for her. Olivia, believing Viola to be a man, falls in love with this handsome and eloquent messenger. Viola, in turn, has fallen in love with the Duke, who also believes Viola is a man, and who regards her as his confidant.

Tudor and Stuart Love Songs

Tudor and Stuart Love Songs

Tudor and Stuart Love Songs

The spirit of reform which was developed during the early part of the sixteenth century brought about a desire on the part of young men of means to travel on the continent of Europe. This was for the purpose of making themselves acquainted with the politics, social life, literature, art, science, and commerce of the various nations of the same, especially of France, Spain, and Italy. These young Englishmen on their return introduced into the society in which they mixed not only the politenesses of these countries, but the wit of Italy, and the character of the poetry which was then in vogue in Southern Europe. Among these travellers during the reign of Henry the Eighth were Sir Thomas Wyatt and the Earl of Surrey. These courtiers possessed the poetical faculty, and therefore paid special attention to literary form. As a result they introduced the Sonnet of the Petrarchan type into England. The amorous verse of the inhabitants of these sunny climes took hold of the young Englishmen. Many men of rank and education, who did not regard themselves as of the world of letters, penned pleasant verse, much of it being of an amatory character based upon that of the Italians. During the reign of “Good Queen Bess” England was full of song. Of the writers of love verses William Watson occupied a very high, probably the highest, position during the time of Elizabeth.

Lover’s Vows

Lover's Vows by Elizabeth Inchbald

Lover's Vows by Elizabeth Inchbald

Lovers’ Vows, a play by Elizabeth Inchbald arguably best known now for having been featured in Jane Austen’s novel Mansfield Park, is one of at least four adaptations of August von Kotzebue’s Das Kind der Liebe (literally “Child of Love,” or “Natural Son,” as it is often translated). Inchbald’s version is the only one to have been performed. Dealing as it does with sex outside marriage and illegitimate birth, Inchbald in the Preface to the published version declares herself to have been highly sensitive to the task of adapting the original German text for “an English audience.” Even so, she left the setting as Germany.
